Old Main Bell Restoration and Plaza: 2009 Class Gift, Penn State (2009-2010)
The bronze bell in the tower of Old Main had been silent for many decades, replaced by analog and now digital sound systems. This relic was brought out into the light during repair work of the tower clocks and set in a plaza within view of it’s old home.
Circular pavement and curved walls were already a theme around the building, so these shapes seemed fitting, along with careful attention to replicate masonry details in an effort to provide a traditional and dignified setting for the old bell. Stone fabricators and bell restoration specialists were integral to the process.
